Understanding Gallstones: Symptoms, Causes & Treatment Options

Published: 25 October 2026

Discover common gallstone symptoms, possible causes, diagnosis and treatment options.

What Are Gallstones?

Gallstones are hardened deposits that can develop inside the gallbladder. They vary in size, and some people have gallstones without experiencing symptoms. The gallbladder stores bile, a digestive fluid produced by the liver.

Common Symptoms

When gallstones cause symptoms, a person may experience pain in the upper-right or upper-middle abdomen, discomfort after meals, nausea or vomiting. Pain can sometimes spread to the back or right shoulder. Symptoms vary, and not every episode of abdominal pain is caused by gallstones.

How Are Gallstones Diagnosed?

A clinician may assess symptoms and medical history and recommend tests such as an abdominal ultrasound or blood tests. Additional investigations may be needed depending on the findings and whether a bile duct problem is suspected.

Treatment Options

Treatment depends on symptoms and complications. People with no symptoms may not need immediate treatment, while symptomatic gallstones may require surgery to remove the gallbladder. A specialist can discuss the most appropriate option after evaluation.

When to Seek Urgent Care

Seek urgent medical assessment for severe or persistent abdominal pain, fever, repeated vomiting, or yellowing of the skin or eyes. These symptoms may indicate a complication that needs prompt treatment.
