Gall stones and bile duct stones

Liver Abscess

A liver abscess is a collection of pus within the liver caused by an infection. It may be bacterial (pyogenic) or parasitic, commonly amoebic. Prompt diagnosis and treatment are important because an untreated abscess can rupture or spread infection.

Hydatid Cyst of the Liver

Hydatid Cyst of the Liver

A hydatid cyst is a parasitic cyst caused by Echinococcus infection. The liver is the most commonly affected organ. Hydatid disease can remain silent for years and may be discovered incidentally during an ultrasound or CT scan.

Liver Cancer

Liver Cancer

Liver cancer develops when abnormal cells grow uncontrollably in the liver. The most common primary liver cancer in adults is hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Liver cancer can also arise from bile duct cells or, more commonly, can spread to the liver from cancers originating elsewhere in the body.

Other Benign Tumors of the Pancreas

Other Tumors of the Liver

Not every liver mass is cancer. Liver lesions may be benign, malignant, or secondary deposits (metastases) from cancer elsewhere in the body.

Liver Abscess
SPECIALIZED CARE

Liver Abscess

Gallstones are hard deposits that form inside the gallbladder. When a stone moves into the common bile duct, it is called a bile duct stone (choledocholithiasis). Many gallstones cause no symptoms, but stones causing pain or complications may require treatment.

Risk Factors

  • Overweight or obesity
  • Rapid weight loss or crash dieting
  • Increasing age
  • Female sex and pregnancy

Symptoms

  • Pain in the right upper abdomen, often after meals
  • Pain radiating to the back or right shoulder
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Bloating or indigestion

Investigations

  • Liver function tests and blood investigations
  • Ultrasound abdomen – usually the first investigation
  • MRCP – detailed imaging of the bile ducts
  • EUS – useful for detecting small duct stones

Treatment

  • Symptomatic gallstones: laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the standard treatment.
  • Bile duct stones: usually removed by ERCP; gallbladder removal is generally recommended when appropriate to prevent recurrent stones.
  • Complicated cases may require laparoscopic, open or advanced biliary procedures.
  • Asymptomatic gallstones: usually require no treatment in most patients.
